Another weekend another reason to go boating

It was a long weekend in Melbourne last weekend with Monday being a Public Holiday (Labour Day), so as you’d expect there was a lot going on. If you were in the city you could have joined the throng that lined the streets to watch the annual Moomba Festival Parade and then wandered down to the banks of the Yarra River to enjoy the carnival atmosphere and catch the action, including the spectacular water ski and wake competition.

For us though, just another excuse to go boating and this time we took Blue Tango down to Corio Bay and spent the weekend enjoying the hospitality of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) and, if you think it was busy in Melbourne with Moomba, the waterfront at Geelong was also wall to wall people with the RGYC hosting the bi-annual Wooden Boat Show. Over 130 wooden boats on display ranging from small dories to tall ships and the opportunity to get on board many of them, or take advantage of the opportunity to sail out into Corio Bay on one of the tall ships and even the odd Couta Boat.

While we had a great weekend enjoying the boat show and all the happenings on the waterfront, we were also there for another reason, to take part in the annual Oslo Cup competition, an annual NavRally held between the RGYC and The Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club (RVMYC). The competition involves boats navigating a 12nm course where competitors are given the start coordinates, an individual start time and distances and bearings for each leg (the course can have 8-15 legs). Competitors nominate their speed beforehand (between 4 and 12 knots) and the competition is to see who can maintain the most accurate time (and course) navigating through a series of (hidden) gates marked on an electronic ‘Tack Tracker’ carried on board. The competition is always close with literally seconds separating competitors.

While some take the competition very seriously, others use it as just another reason to get out on the water and use their boat. For us on our boat, I always tell people it’s the latter, but just between you and me, I’d love to get up into the placings, at least just once.

And now to this edition of Shipmate News and another round up of what’s happening in the marine world around the country. So sit back, browse through and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
