Life’s better with a boat

Our headline this week is the Boating Industry Association of Victoria’s (BIAV) current campaign ‘Life’s Better With a Boat’. The campaign is aimed at selling the boating lifestyle, which is a win-win for all, those that get into the lifestyle and of course the industry in general.

I’m very fortunate because I live the lifestyle, both in my work and my leisure time. I spend a lot of time on boats, all along the east coast of Australia from Victoria up to the Whitsundays and I’ve enjoyed some fabulous boating in beautiful locations.

I’m often asked where the best boating is and, while I do have some favourite spots, sometimes the best days out on the water come from the simplest outings and often very close to home.

I thought about the BIAV’s campaign last weekend when a group from my club, (Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club) took our boats to Marina YE in Melbourne’s Docklands where we enjoyed a great night socializing across boats; good food, good company and then staying overnight at the marina. Next day, in glorious and warm sunshine, some of us in tenders, others in small boats (able to get under Melbourne’s low bridges), cruised upstream along the Yarra River through the CBD for a picnic on Herring Island.

Accessible only by boat, Herring Island is just 3km from Melbourne’s CBD, but once there, the tranquillity seems like it’s a hundred miles from anywhere. The island is a haven for nature and art lovers, there’s a large grassy picnic area with free electric barbecues and picnic shelters, native flora, fauna and large environmental sculptures are dotted right around the island. It’s a great location, one of Melbourne hidden gems and a perfect spot for a picnic… As long as you have a boat.

Of course it doesn’t matter whether you’re in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, or anywhere else for that matter, as long as you’ve got a boat you’ll come across those hidden gems, beautiful locations, away from the hustle and bustle where you can spend quality time with family and friends. Life is definitely better with a boat. See the BIAV campaign at and in other states see the BIA NSW, SA, QLD’s
