Shipmate News 01 February 2016

We're back on deck and raring to go

Welcome to the first Shipmate News for 2016, I have to say it's certainly nice to be back. As you know we take a break every year over the Christmas period, the opportunity for a bit of 'me' time, we get a chance to relax, unwind and go boating. But before we get right back into it, I’d firstly like to wish you all a slightly belated Happy New Year.

Now of course, just because we take a break doesn't mean there's not plenty happening in the marine world, right around Australia, and so, while we don't send out Shipmate News while we're away, we do keep posting news on the website as it happens. And so, in this first edition of the year we've got plenty to report. A really good mix of marine news, views and information and something for everyone.

If you’re in South-East Queensland (SEQ) and receiving this newsletter for the first time a warm welcome to you. Chances are you’re one of the nearly 400 new marine businesses from the Sunshine State that we’ve listed (free) in Shipmate Marine Directory – the recreational boaters essential guide, in just the last few months.

While this is the first newsletter for the year, we’ve actually been back on deck for a couple of weeks now, spending time visiting marine businesses and talking to boaters in VIC, NSW and QLD. I’m really pleased to report that there’s a real buzz of optimism in the air and that seems to be the case right around the country.

If you’re in Victoria, you’ll be pleased to know that the 2016 (12th annual) print edition of Shipmate Marine Directory is out now. You can pick up your free copy of this 148 page pocket wonder from yacht clubs, marinas, marine organisations and selected marine businesses, or, better yet, pick up a copy of the current Tradeaboat magazine, (out now) and find a hitchhiker attached. Yes, a free copy of Shipmate is attached to every copy of Tradeaboat sold (in Victoria) this month.

And in South-East Queensland, we’ve already started on a print edition exclusively for SEQ timed to be out in time for the start of the boat show season in May. 10,000 copies will be distributed free to boaters there via yacht clubs, marinas, shipyards, marine organisations and selected marine businesses.

And now to what’s in this edition; well, as we said earlier, something for everyone including a great feel-good story about a couple of quick-thinking junior sailors out of Rye (Vic), who were out sailing, saw a man in the water who was in trouble and saved his life. And from our good friend, lawyer, sailor and shipwright, Marcel Vaarzon-Morel, another of his great articles, this time on the specialized law of yachting.

We’ve got the usual raft of new models being released, launched or about to debut, both here and internationally, as well as a whole lot of other interesting stuff, including details of a revolutionary new underwater lighting system that eliminates the need for any through-hull drilling… (You gotta love technology).

Plenty more of course, but perhaps I should just allow you to sit back, browse through and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water

John Zammit
