Kids n’ Ribs

There’s always been plenty of things for kids to get involved with in relation to sailing. Tackers, Learn2sail, Cadets etc. In fact most yacht clubs have some sort of junior program that gets kids involved in sailing at an early age.

Powerboats on the other hand are a little different. Programs specifically aimed at juniors driving power boats are few and far between. One of the clubs that I belong to is aiming to address that void.

The Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club in Williamstown (RVMYC) has developed a program for kids under 16 years. The aim is to get youth involved in power boating at an early age enabling them to gain the appropriate skills and learn that responsible boating is safe, fun and a great family activity.

The RVMYC has recently launched the Club Marine RVMYC Youth RIB Program which is based on a similar program that’s been running successfully in the UK for a number of years. The program, designed to be both educational and fun for the kids, revolves around a skills based competition where participants drive a 4.2m RIB fitted with a 40hp outboard around a predetermined course incorporating a slalom run, ‘man overboard’ and reversing maneuvers, in the form of a time trial.

A strict safety regime is in place with an adult instructor always on board and both, child and instructor, are attached to safety lanyards connected to the engine kill switch. There is only one vessel on the course at any one time and the aim is to get the ‘smoothest’ run rather than the fastest, with time penalties for touching buoys, not coming to a dead stop at the man overboard and water over the transom when reversing.

Thanks to sponsorship from Club Marine Insurance and R Marine Jacksons Vic, and after running a number of trials, the first 5 week series is underway. The ultimate aim is to eventually extend the program to other clubs, initially within Victoria and eventually interstate. We’ll bring you more on this exciting new program in future editions but, in the meantime for more details contact the RVMYC at or phone 03 9393 2888
