Shipmate News 17 August 2015

Sales expectations highest in a decade

An interesting survey released earlier this month indicates that things are looking better than they have for years, but before we get into that, wanted to share our good fortune with you in announcing that after twenty seven years working with the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Exhibition Manager, Harry Davis, is moving on and we're delighted to announce that Harry’s joined us at Shipmate.

Harry will be our ‘Man on the Ground’ in South East Queensland, getting around making sure that marine businesses there take advantage of the opportunities in Shipmate, especially the opportunity to obtain a free listing enabling them to directly connect with boaters. Plans are also underway to publish a South East Queensland annual print edition of Shipmate Marine Directory – the recreational boaters essential guide, similar to the 148 page pocket wonder, currently published in Victoria. See more details in this edition.

And Harry’s not the only one that’s joined Shipmate in recent times, we’ve also got the welcome mat out for Marcel Vaarzon-Morel. Long time sailor, qualified shipwright, practicing lawyer with extensive experience in maritime and commercial law and an interesting writer, Marcel will join us from time to time with interesting, practical and informative articles about boating and the law. See Marcel’s first article in this edition on tips for buying a boat and watch out for more from Marcel in future editions.

And now with the Sydney International Boat Show over for another year we got a wrap-up and with over 50,000 visitors through the gates and plenty of positive reports from exhibitors, you’d have to say it was definitely a successful show. The buyers are coming back and that trend is confirmed by results of the latest ‘Business Expectations Survey’ released by Dun & Bradstreet earlier this month.

According to the survey, the Sales Expectations Index for the fourth quarter 2015 surged to 40.8 points, up from 28.6 points last quarter and the highest level recorded since the fourth quarter of 2003. In a further positive sign, 36% of businesses surveyed increased sales during the second quarter of 2015 and 48% expect to see an increase in sales in the fourth quarter. They’re telling numbers which to me say that if you’re not in that 48% expecting sales to increase, then perhaps you should consider your strategy. And if you are in that 48%, well then maybe you should consider how to maintain those expectations and stay ahead of the game (and your competitors).

Which brings me to my final point and the fact that we’ve now released the advertising for the 2016 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory, print edition for Victoria. 10,000 copies are distributed annually direct to boaters via yacht clubs, marinas, marine organisations and selected marine businesses. With prices as low as $630 for a half page and $1050 for a full page, in a publication that lasts a full 12 months and is referred to time and time again throughout the year by boaters, just when they’re looking to buy, you won’t find better value for your advertising dollar anywhere.

Check out our media kit here: or give us a call and we’ll send you a copy, but hurry, advertising sells out quickly every year.

That’s it from me till next time, sit back, browse through and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water

John Zammit
