It’s Shooowtime!

It was definitely show time on the Gold Coast last week with the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and the Gold Coast International Marine Expo running concurrently and by all accounts organisers at both events were happy with the results. There’s plenty of reports in this edition from both organisers and exhibitors about how well they went. At Sanctuary Cove they’re claiming it was the best show they’ve had in 5 years and over at Coomera, at the Gold Coast Marine Expo and the Riviera Festival of Boating, they’re reporting the biggest and best show ever.

And it’s good to hear that things are moving again and boats are selling, but behind the scenes, all is not well in paradise. We’ve now got two major shows running concurrently and in competition for both exhibitors and visitors and, in some quarters, there is some quiet concern being expressed. Not only about the two shows running concurrently but the fact they appear to be not communicating, to the extent that even though both shows are less than a half hour apart by road or water, there was no ferry or road link between the two.

How this situation has come about all seems a bit irrelevant now, the reality is what it is; an irresistible force has met an immovable object. Speaking to exhibitors at both shows, some are concerned that with the two shows seemingly doing their own thing, exhibitors either need to be at both, costly in terms of manpower and resources, or choose one over the other; not ideal. And as for visitors? I haven’t seen the final numbers but there’s no doubt there was a bit of confusion.

While they’re both boat shows, the two are very different and both have plenty to offer, especially to visitors. Marketed correctly, with a ferry or road link between the two, could possibly work for both. I must say I felt for poor old Tom Tate, the Mayor of the Gold Coast, he opened both shows, separately, talk about having a bit each way. I was only at one of the openings and couldn’t help but wonder if he would be politically correct and make the same speech at both.

I think this situation still has a way to go before it’s fully played out and I’m not sure that all of the cards have been fully dealt yet, but for the sake of all concerned, let’s hope that cooler heads prevail and this situation is resolved before next year.

I’d be interested to hear your comments on this or any other matter, so please let me know what you think. Email me at You can also find us at on Facebook at and follow us on twitter at
