Spotlight on marine in May

Plenty of marine industry buzz emanating out of Queensland this month and in particular the Gold Coast. Seems the month of May is fast becoming the most important month of the year on the marine calendar.

This month kicks off with Marine15 International Conference and Trade Exhibition with ‘Boating for the future' as the theme. From 03-05 May at RACV Royal Pines on the Gold Coast, Marine15 will bring together industry professionals from Australia, New Zealand, China, Korea and beyond for three days of conference, networking, education and inspiration.

Then on 19-20 May the Australian Superyacht and Marine Export Conference (ASMEX); the key conference for the marine export and superyacht industry will be held at Sanctuary Cove’s InterContinental Resort. The ASMEX conference is focused on the marine export and superyacht sectors providing a platform for sharing of information and the opportunity to do business with industry.

Then of course the boat show season kicks off proper with Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, the Gold Coast International Marine Expo and the Riviera Festival of Boating, all happening at the same time from 21-24 May.

I’m looking forward to getting to all of the above starting with Marine 15, where, apart from catching up with marine industry folk from around the country, there’s plenty to learn, see and do. After that I’m looking forward to putting the feet up for a while and going boating.

And now to this edition of Shipmate News and we’ve got plenty of info on all of the events mentioned above and a whole lot more including a couple of unusual and interesting articles.

One in particular, which I initially thought may have been a belated April Fools day joke is about the University of Rochester, NY. Seems they’ve used lasers to permanently transform metals into water repellent or super-hydrophobic materials which has plenty of application in the marine industry. Turns out it’s true and quite a breakthrough see more details below.

And details too about the 98-foot Superyacht sitting on a beach, high and dry in Cambodia. It belongs to Sergey Polonsky, who made the Forbes list of billionaires in 2008 with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion. Seems Polonsky also has a different kind of listing – a 'red notice' on the Interpol site, stating that he is wanted in Russia accused of embezzling millions. More on that below too.
