Ahh Queensland, beautiful one day… Interesting the next

Here we are with Easter almost upon us and then it’s only a few short weeks to the start of the Australian boat show season once again. And what an interesting way to kick off the season this year, what with Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, the Riviera Festival of Boating and the Gold Coast International Marine Expo all taking place at the same time in May and all within a short drive, or river cruise, of each other.

Now not every one is happy about all three shows running concurrently and I don’t want to get into the politics of it all. I can see the issues from all sides, including the dilemma for some exhibitors, after all, it’s just not economically or logistically practical to exhibit at all three. However, from the punters perspective I think it’s a hell of a drawcard to be able to head up (or down) to the Gold Coast and spend a couple (or three or four) days getting around all of the shows, each of them slightly different and each with their own attraction.

In my view getting punters through the door has to be the end game, after all, isn’t that what it’s all about? I, like a lot of others, will be very interested to see the final numbers and, if the result is increased visitors for all three, then everyone’s a winner. In the meantime though, I’m one of those punters and I just can’t wait to get up there to check out all the new models, equipment, accessories and all the other attractions on offer at all three shows. And of course, being from Melbourne, nice to get up and spend a few days in the sun.

And speaking of sun, had to rush to get this edition of Shipmate News out bright and early, I’m heading off for a few days, this time to Hervey Bay to catch up with a mate of mine who’s travelling up the coast and over the top to Broome in a 45’ Clipper. The plan is to spend a few days cruising north enjoying that beautiful part of Australia’s coastline and of course, soaking up a bit more of that ‘vitamin D’.

And now to what’s in this edition and there's plenty as usual from right around the country but, just before I sign off, just want to say a quick thank you to Club Marine Insurance and R Marine Jacksons (the Victorian Riviera dealer). My local club, the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club, (the oldest continually running motor yacht club in the world) is putting together a fun and exciting powerboat program for kids aged 8 – 12 years and these guys have got right behind it with some fabulous support.

The program aims to introduce children to the joys of boating, while at the same time providing them with education and skills in proper and safe powerboat handling. The program, to be known as the Club Marine RVMYC Youth RIB Program is educational but presented in a practical, fun and interesting way in the form of a skills-based competition where the children spend the maximum time out on the water driving outboard powered RIBS.

I look forward to giving you more details in future editions as the program gets up and running but in the meantime, sit back and check out this edition of Shipmate News, I’m sure you’ll find something of interest.

Cheers, see you out on the water

John Zammit.
