Change - It's as good as a holiday

I’m not sure these days if it’s just the pace of life that’s increasing or I’m slowing down as I get older. Changes are happening so fast, not only economic and technological change but in seemingly every aspect of life.

It wasn’t all that long ago we’d pick up the phone to call a friend or associate, now it’s a short two line email or text, and of course we require an immediate response. We’re far too busy to spend five minutes talking to someone; things to do, places to be… And efficiency, we’ve got to make sure not a minute is wasted, after all, these days, time is money, no time to stop and smell the roses.

But don’t get me wrong, while I might lament the passing of some of the niceties of days gone by, I’m very open to change and I love technology, I’ve even been tagged as being an ‘early adopter’ of new technology. In my view technology makes life easier, both in work and leisure. And anything that makes life easier, I’m for; I even think they should have given a Nobel Prize to the guy who invented the Bow Thruster, after all, they gave a gong to Albert Einstein and what did he do? All he did was give us a theory; E = mc2 so what? Can’t remember ever using it… Now a Bow Thruster on the other hand…

But all jokes aside, what brought me to the subject of change and technology was this edition of Shipmate News. It’s full of information about changes taking place in the marine industry and new technology being developed at a rapid pace.

First off we’ve got some info from Galeon Yachts who are releasing a couple of innovative new models featuring hull sides that fold down to expand the cockpit area to create a new ‘Beach Mode’. And while we’re on the subject of new models, a majestic new flagship for Riviera, the world’s first Jet Surf Wakeboat from Chaparral a new Oceanis 35 from Beneteau and Mercury have released a new 350HP four stoke outboard.

On the electronics side, we’ve got a new Sonar and new multi function displays from Garmin and Victorian boaters can now access vital boating safety information about the State’s waterways via new online maps developed by Maritime Safety Victoria.

In other news we have details on Riviera’s Festival of Boating and the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, both of which will be held concurrently with the Gold Coast International Marine Expo in May.

And that’s still just scratching the surface of news, views and information in this edition. So sit back, have a browse and enjoy the read. I'm off to check out prices on a new GPS with a touchscreen.

Cheers, see you out on the water
