Fun, sun and hidden gems

I’ve been fortunate to have enjoyed boating in most of the eastern states and while there are some magnificent spots to go boating as you travel north from my home state of Victoria, we’re not without a few hidden gems right here.

I was reminded of that last weekend when we went boating on a beautiful warm and sunny day up into Melbourne’s Yarra River to Herring Island, about 12k from the river mouth and around 3k upriver from Melbourne’s CBD. An idyllic spot and definitely one of those hidden gems, Herring Island is a haven for nature lovers, those that appreciate art and anyone who loves a bit of peace and tranquility.

It’s only accessible by boat and unfortunately for us boaters, Melbourne’s low bridges can sometimes create a problem, but what we did to overcome the height issue was take our boat to Marina YE at Docklands where we launched our tender and went upriver in the little RIB. In fact we joined a flotilla, 12 boats in all, RIBS and other small boats able to get under the bridges, the lowest being at Spencer Street, with a clearance of 2.47m at high tide.

The cruise upriver is interesting as you cruise past Docklands, Southbank, through the CBD, past Birrurung Marr, the Tennis Centre and other Melbourne icons. It took us around 45 minutes from Docklands and once there we were able to raft up at a landing to go ashore. The island has a large grassed picnic area, toilets, free electric barbeques and shelters. Dotted around the island is a large number of site-specific sculptures made of natural materials such as earth, stone and wood, many created by internationally renowned artists.

We enjoyed a great day, made good use of the facilities, especially the free barbeques and the picnic area, we sat around, relaxed and felt the serenity. We could have been a hundred miles from civilization, yet we were only just a few km’s from the CBD and, while the island itself was a highlight, the cruise up the Yarra, through the city on a beautiful sunny day, is something every boater should experience and something that I’d highly recommend.

And now to this edition of Shipmate News with another good round up of news from around the country.

Cheers, see you out on the water
