Marine news, views and information – All here

Welcome to another edition of Shipmate News with a full round up of marine news, views and information from around the country (and a couple of interesting snippets from overseas).

But just before we get into that, just wanted to share with you a recent highlight of my year that occurred last week.

We were fortunate enough to be out on the water to watch NUSHIP Canberra, the first of the two new amphibious assault ships known as Helicopter Landing Docks (LHD’s) being built for the Australian Defence Force at BAE Systems in Williamstown, leave the dockyard after completion, bound for her home port in Sydney.

She, and sister ship Adelaide, which is yet to be completed, are the largest ships ever operated by the RAN. At nearly 28,000 tonne, almost a third larger than the Navy’s previous largest ship HMAS Melbourne.

Her departure was certainly an impressive sight as she slipped quietly out of her berth at Williamstown, with the Westgate Bridge and Melbourne’s CBD forming a spectacular backdrop. And, as we followed her out and down the bay, she looked positively awesome.

The Canberra has since arrived at her new home at Garden Island in Sydney where she’ll be formally commissioned into the Australian fleet as HMAS Canberra on 28 November 2014. See more details in this edition.

But that’s by no means all that’s been going on, lots more for you in this edition including news that the State Government has renewed funding for the Southern Hemisphere’s largest sailing regatta, the Festival of Sails. News too regarding Fisheries Victoria who are starting a blitz this weekend concentrating on fishers exceeding the bag limit for the taking of snapper.

And still in Victoria, news that a new waterfront suburb is about to take shape at Nelson Cove in Corio Bay with a huge new marina planned.

Plenty more of course, from right around Australia, so perhaps we should just let you browse through and see what interests you.

Just before I close though, a reminder that Shipmate Marine Directory is now Australia wide, so if you supply a trade or service to boaters anywhere around the country, log on to and list your organisation, it’s free! And if you’re a boater looking for a trade or service, simply go to the website, select your category and you can even filter the listings by individual state or region.

That’s it from me till next time, sit back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
