Springtime and boating

Got to love Melbourne in the spring time, just a couple of weekends ago, a glorious spring day, sun shining, a gentle 10kn breeze and a group of us, 9 boats in all ranging from 20’ to 35’, spent the day cruising up the Maribyrnong River. The Maribyrnong River doesn’t normally feature highly as a boating destination in Melbourne, unless you’re heading to the Melbourne Cup in November, at which time it’s gets very busy, but other than that, very few power boats venture up this picturesque waterway.

Not too sure why, perhaps it’s the fact that you need to get past all the industrial stuff around Coode Island and the docks but, get past the first few km’s of the Maribyrnong and it opens up into the most picturesque and interesting river with plenty of piers and jetties adjacent to parklands where you can stop and picnic.

We ventured right up to Canning Street in Avondale Heights where we enjoyed a great day and made use of the free BBQ’s in the park and while the picnic with family and friends was great, the best part of the day was meandering up and back along the river which took around an hour and a half each way from Williamstown.

A sensational day out on the water with family and friends with good food, great weather; to me, that’s what boating is all about.

And now to Shipmate News and another big edition with a good round up of what’s happening around the country. Once again, I’m sure you’ll find something of interest so sit back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
