Shipmate News 15 September 2014

The business of boating

One of our biggest editions of Shipmate News in quite a while this time round so, whether you’re into fishing, sailing, cruising, looking for new equipment, or finding out about the latest advances in boating safety, there's something here for you.

Something that came in late that caught my eye though was the article from the Marina Industries Association (MIA) that indicated that Victorian marinas have the highest lease, tax and payroll costs of marinas in any state of Australia. In Victoria these costs accounted for a massive 61.2% of gross revenue compared to the national average of 44%. Tasmania and WA were lowest at 37% and 38% respectively.

The figures above form part of a larger report on the Australian marina industry produced from research and data collected from 163 of Australia’s 347 marinas.

Also in this edition, news of the launch of the Australian Marine Industry Advisory Group, a partnership of Boating Industries Alliance Australia, Australian Marine Export Group and the Marina Industries Association with the principal objective of advancing the interests of their members by providing government with informed, relevant and up to date advice on the issues impacting the boating sector. Hmm, maybe providing government with the aforementioned MIA report might be a good start.

As we indicated earlier, this edition is not all about politics though, we’ve got news about a new modernised satellite system that will enhance the regional search and rescue system used to detect emergency distress beacons and, while we’re on the subject of safety, news that leading marine safety organizations from around the world have formed a collaborative effort to promote the wearing of lifejackets when boating.

Plenty more still in this edition but, before you settle back, just an update on Shipmate and where we’re at. Firstly, our thanks to all of our advertisers and supporters, with advertising in the 2015 (print) edition of Shipmate now closed I’m pleased to say the support for this edition has just been fantastic, again!

Also our website continues to produce great results, last month we had over 26,000 visits, over 100% up on this time last year and that continues to grow steadily.

Another slight tweak to our website has resulted in making our smartphone App almost redundant. Now the website has been fully optimised for smartphones and tablets so, just visit and save the web address to your desktop and enjoy the total Shipmate website experience on your tablet or smartphone.

That’s it from me again till next time, sit back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
