Celebrating the boating lifestyle
Today is the first day of spring and if the weather in Melbourne over the weekend was anything to go by then we’re in for some great boating weather.
In sunny Melbourne, the weekend kicked off in glorious sunshine and light variable winds, just perfect for the celebration of Melbourne Day with the Melbourne Regatta and Blessing of the Fleet and we joined the flotilla of vessels of all shapes and sizes out on the water.
A huge fleet of commercial and private boats completely filled Victoria Harbour in Melbourne's Docklands while father Bob McGuire performed the blessing. Pipe bands on board some of the larger commercial boats entertained the flotilla and the thousands who gathered on the waterfront, prior to and following the blessing.
Then there was mass singing of the mariners hymn before the flotilla, led by the historical schooner Enterprize, performed a spectacular sail-past, sailing from Victoria Harbor, out under the Bolte Bridge and back.
The Enterprize and the Alma Doepel volunteers, showcasing their recently restored traditional naval 4 oared captains gig, then performed a re-enactment of the first landing in period costume.
Plenty of activity for visitors followed, both on and off the water, with cruises around Melbourne's ports to see big ships up close, displays of tugs with water cannons and emergency service vessels. Plenty for the kids too with story-telling about the first landing and street entertainment that continued for most of the day.
That’s just some of what took place in Melbourne over the weekend and, in this edition of Shipmate News, you can catch up with what’s been happening in the boating world around the rest of Australia.
But just before you settle back, we just want to share with you something that we here at Shipmate are really proud of and excited about. This morning we received the latest stats for our website and they tell us that in August we had over 26,000 visits to www.shipmate.com.au
More importantly, visits to the Shipmate website are steadily rising, so if you’re in the business of providing products or services to boaters, then speak to us about how we can provide you with a conduit for letting boaters know what you can do for them.
And of course if you’re a boater, then you already know that; no matter what it is you’re looking for in terms of keeping your pride and joy in tip top order, you’ll find it on Shipmate and, best of all, it’s still completely free!
Finally, just letting you know that we are about to close off the advertising for the 2015 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory – Print edition, so if you want to be included, then you'd better be quick or you'll miss out. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone: 03 9399 9194 ASAP.
That’s it for me again till next time, so settle back and enjoy the read.
Cheers, see you out on the water
