Shipmate News 15 August 2015

Technology, it could save your life

Technology! Love it or hate it, it’s part of life. Somewhere, and probably on a daily basis, your personal records are being accessed by corporations or government, you’re regularly captured on CCTV, your phone records are being recorded by your Telco, and on it goes.

There is an upside though. In this edition you’ll find a story on the Australian Maritime Safety Authority who just this week responded to 3 separate emergency beacon activations in one day, resulting in the rescue of 13 people. That’s technology at work. Imagine the consequences of a day like that in the days before EPIRBS.

Personally, I like technology. In my view while we may have lost some of our privacy, there’s plenty of benefits and the above is just one example. Another is the fact that information these days is so readily available, literally just a Google click away.

With technoliogy advancing so fast, the Shipmate website is a constant work-in-progress. We’re forever tweaking, adjusting and adding to the online experience for visitors. We’ve just revamped our site again to make it even more mobile-friendly and it now automatically morphs itself for best viewing, dependent on the medium on which it’s being viewed.

Viewing the site on your smartphone or tablet now is actually better than accessing our App. In fact, our App has now become almost redundant.

We now suggest for the best mobile online experience, logon to www.shipmate.com.au from your mobile device and save it to your home screen. An icon will appear on the screen and you’ll be able to access the site with a single click, just like the App, except with all the added benefits of the website including video, marine weather, Shipmate News and all of the other free stuff.

But we’re not stopping there. We’ll continue to work on Shipmate, providing a conduit between boaters and marine product and service providers and, if you think you have a suggestion that can make us better at what we do, let’s hear it, contact me at info@shipmate.com.au

And finally, just a reminder the 2015 print edition of Shipmate is currently being prepared. For details on advertising download our Media Kit at www.shipmate.com.au/advertise/

Cheers. See you out on the water
