Shipmate News 15 July 2014

Whatever floats your boat

It's winter and if like me your down south it can get mighty cold, but the good news is that we're past the Winter Solstice and soon it'll be spring again. In the meantime we can take comfort in knowing that at this time of year there are some magnificent boating days and last weekend in Melbourne, Sunday especially, was a great day to be out on the water, just a slight breeze, smooth seas and bright sunshine.

The other thing to look forward to at this time of year is the Sydney International Boat Show, starting 31 July through to 04 August. This year will be the first of the 'split' shows with the in-water at Darling Harbour and the indoor pavilion at Glebe Island. Organisers appear to have their act together with the indoor pavilion sold out and a regular ferry system, by road and water, in place to get patrons between the two locations. I'm looking forward to being there. More details on the show below.

In other marine news from around the country, Victoria's, Variety Splash is back with a new format promising heaps of fun for boaters and a unique way to enjoy your boat in an event that raises funds for sick, disadvantaged and special needs children. And in Portland, the opening a brand new boat ramp with improved facilities will make getting out to chase those big tuna easier and more convenient.

Further north in Bowen (Qld) last month the Superboats were the main attraction with the charming Whitsunday town turning on perfect weather creating ideal racing conditions and we've got the full wrap below. And still in the sunshine state, news that a couple of Maritimo models from both ends of the size spectrum are proving popular with buyers.

From a safety point of view, a reminder from the ACCC about a recall of a GME Accusat EPIRB initiated last December, prompted by a microprocessor malfunction, which can cause the EPIRB to fail the self-test procedure. The ACCC is concerned that affected units may still be in use. See more details in this edition.

And, a couple of unusual articles, the first about a barnacle-encrusted Mercury outboard recovered some 200 nautical miles off Dampier in Western Australia, started and ran after spending months underwater. And if that's not unusual enough, then for those with a lazy 1.5 million Euros lying around, your own private island awaits. Isola di Mal Ventre is probably the only private island available for sale in the Med and lies just a few miles off the north coast of Sardinia. We've got all the details on how it can be yours.

Lots more in this edition but, before we close we wanted to let you know that we've commenced production of the next edition of Shipmate Marine Directory - the recreational boaters essential guide (print edition). If you want to get your message across to boaters in a publication that lasts a full 12 months and is constantly referred to time and time again, then check out the exceptional value that Shipmate provides with a half page just $590 and full page for a low $990. That's it from me, sit back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
