Shipmate News 01 May 2014

It's all happening out on the water

With only three days separating the Easter Weekend and Anzac Day this year I took the opportunity to take an extended break and headed north from Melbourne to one of my favourite locations, Port Stephens, just north of Newcastle in NSW. While I do love Melbourne, especially boating in Melbourne in Autumn when there’s generally less wind and the waters are calm, I have to admit as I get a little older, I miss the sunshine and the warm and being up north recently, the weather certainly did not disappoint.

If you’ve never been to that part of Australia then you’re missing out. Apart from the great boating, the fishing there is legendary, the whales during the whale-watching season (June to November) are prolific, as are the dolphins, the beaches are superb and in terms of things to do in the area, that’s still only just scratching the surface.

We spent hours on the water in boats and jet skis, and therein lies my point. A couple of points really… The first is that it pays to have friends with boats in great locations and, secondly, how lucky we are in this country, while we might complain about politicians, the value of the A$ and countless other things, it’s just great that we have the freedom and the ability to travel around the country to vastly different locations and climes and enjoy what each has to offer.

And now to this edition of Shipmate News and with the boat show season proper about to get underway, Sanctuary Cove is just three weeks away, we’ve got a number of articles about the show.

Also in this edition, an update from Robert and Rose Unger, currently 8 weeks into a once-in-a-lifetime adventure cruise from Melbourne to Broome in their 72' Princess, a cruise that will take them seven months. And while we’re on cruising, an article about Peter and Narelle Williams living the dream on board their Riviera 47, they’ve cruised some 36,000 nautical miles over the past seven years and will share some of their remarkable adventures at the upcoming 2014 Riviera Festival of Boating.

There’s lots more too, including new and updated products from Mercury and Lowrance, The launch of the 2015 International 14 Class World Championships, to be held in Geelong, (Vic) in January and a call from the BIA in Victoria for feedback on ideas for improving recreational boating infrastructure.

In the last edition of Shipmate News we mentioned the imminent release of the ‘Boating Survival Guide’ a book by respected boating expert Doug King. It’s on sale now at $29.95 and you’ll find details below but, if you’d like a free copy, just visit our website at and check out any of the videos on our home page. Then just email us at telling us the topic of any one of the current videos showing. We have two copies to give away to the first two correct responses.

That’s about it from me hope you enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water

John Zammit
