Shipmate News 03 March 2014

We’re working hard to make it easy for you

Welcome to this edition of Shipmate News and again we’ve been working behind the scenes to provide boaters with more info on what’s happening around the country and to make that information more accessible.

Starting with this edition, this blog that precedes each edition of Shipmate News will be posted to Facebook with a link to a new archive section on our website where you can view current and past editions of Shipmate News.

In terms of what’s been going on, there was certainly great boating weather last weekend in my neck of the woods, Melbourne. On Saturday we dropped the pick off Point Cook in Port Phillip where we enjoyed front row seats at the Centenary of Military Aviation 2014 Air Show held at RAAF Williams.

Point Cook is the birthplace of military aviation in Australia and the oldest continually operating military airfield in the world. The air show was spectacular including military planes of all types from all eras but, the highlight for me was the F18’s flying so fast, so low (and so loud) you could clearly see the pilots in the cockpit,

And now to what’s in this edition. We’ve got details of new product releases from electronics manufacturers Simrad and Raymarine and an announcement by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron that the Sail Brisbane Regatta will include selection for the second Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games.

We have an announcement by Marine Queensland that new registration figures released recently show that the sunshine state is now home to more than a quarter million boats and from luxury boat builder Riviera, news that they’ve joined forces with the Gold Coast’s Helensvale State High School to rekindle the school-based apprentice boat building program.

From Victoria we‘ve got an update from the Port of Hastings Container Expansion Project and a warning to boaters to keep clear of barges that are doing survey work within Western Port. News too about an upgrade to the Patterson River boat ramps to provide for better car and trailer parking.

Also in this edition we acknowledge the recent passing of Lou Abrahams a legend of the sailing world. We’ve reprinted a tribute to Lou from Chris Carlile, Commodore of the Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) where Lou was a life member, past commodore, mentor and role model.

For those reading this on Facebook for the first time we say welcome and make sure you visit our website at for those reading this via email we invite you to like us on Facebook here:

That’s it from me for this edition so sit back and enjoy the read

Cheers, see you out on the water
