Shipmate News 15 February 2014

I’ve gone to the dark side

If you had asked me a few years ago, or maybe even just a year ago, I would have said, no, definitely not, never, it’s just not me! But now I have to admit, I’ve capitulated, turned, gone to the dark side... I’ve bought a Jet Ski.

Now I know that age sometimes does funny things to people and the term ‘mid-life-crisis’ may well spring to mind but, let me assure you, I’ve had my mid-life-crisis, more years ago than I care to remember and this is not another one. The simple truth is that I’ve now come to the conclusion that, used properly, Jet Ski’s, or to use the correct term, Personal Water Craft, (PWC) can be a lot of fun and can take you to places that you can’t get to in a boat.

It’s really unfortunate that a small minority have given them such a bad reputation. The reality is that most PWC users are not Hoons, they’re law abiding, considerate and responsible. I've had the opportunity to see first hand how much fun they can be, how they can be used to get somewhere fast, explore places inaccessible to a lot of boats and, as a family, get the kids involved. The other thing is that, relative to boats, the outlay is not huge.

Of course, that’s not to say that my PWC will replace any of my boats, It’s just another way to get out and enjoy the water and, after all, isn’t that what it’s all about... Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Now to this edition of Shipmate News and another good mix of marine news from around the country starting with our Clothing Partner Helly Hansen announcing that they are again the major sponsors of the Sydney Harbor Regatta coming up in March.

And just when you thought you’d heard the last of the Festival of Sails held in Geelong last month, details of the results of the Beneteau First Nationals with entrants from three states sharing national spoils in their respective IRC Divisions and a wrap up of the Australian Gill Melges 24 World Championship held straight after.

More good news too from Riviera. The luxury Queensland based boat builder has made a positive start to the New Year, recruiting 30 new team members across all aspects of the business to meet the company’s growing global demand for it’s products.

A change of date too for the Gold Coast International Marine Expo which comes forward slightly to October 17, 18 and 19 when the weather is a little cooler and to avoid conflicting with other major events such as, the Melbourne Cup and the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

And finally, make sure you check out the first edition of the all-new Tradeaboat, the 'Complete Book of Boats'. A merger of Tradeaboat and Trailer Boat magazines, the whopping 450 page publication is on sale now and includes news and reviews on everything from the smallest tinnie to the latest Superyacht and lots of 'how to', all in the same publication.

And, if you're in Victoria there's an extra bonus, you'll find a copy of the 152 page, pocket size, 2014 Shipmate Marine Directory - the recreational boaters essential guide, attached to the cover of every Tradeaboat magazine sold this month so, head on down to your newsagent and pick up your copy and get three times the value for the price of one.

Now, back to this edition and we have something for everyone again so, sit back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
