Whatever floats your boat, it’s all here

Ho Ho Ho, the fat guy in the red suit is almost ready to roll and there’s still so much to do, it’s the same every year around this time when it hits home that there’s only three weeks to go till the holidays.

Still, something for everyone again in this edition and in Victoria you may have noticed the algal blooms in and around Port Phillip, especially at the northern end. Not much to worry about we’re told with details in this edition. And, along the east coast, thousands of dead birds washed up on beaches. They’re Shearwaters, they’ve come on their annual migration from the Bering Sea. Some years the birds arrive underweight and exhausted from their mammoth flight and as a result many die from starvation, unfortunately, it’s just nature at work and we’ve got the full story below.

Of course, there’s still the ongoing issue facing the boating industry, lack of government support! It’s an issue not just for marine manufacturers either. There are 5 million recreational boaters around the country and what they contribute to Australia’s economy needs to be quantified so that the economic benefits of boating can be presented to government to support the case for more attention with issues, including the lack of infrastructure. Boaters can assist by getting involved with the National Boaters Survey being run by the BIAA and you’ll find details in this edition.

Plenty of info too on events coming up, including the 9er Nationals being run at Brighton over the holidays, the Festival of Sails at Geelong in January and the announcement that Perth is to host the 2016 World University Match Racing Championship (Sailing).

And details of a couple of book launches; firstly, in a celebration of 21 years of gourmet food in Club Marine Magazine, they’ve launched Club Marine Gourmet Delights, a quality cookbook with more than 100 original recipes and secondly; the Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) has, for the first time, launched their annual publication, the Australian Marine Export Industry Directory, at METS (world’s biggest marine trade show) on November 19 in Amsterdam. You’ll find details below on where you can get a copy of either or both of these publications.

And speaking of book launches, don’t forget that the 2014 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory – the recreational boaters essential guide, is out now and available free from yacht clubs, marinas, marine organisations and selected marine businesses. This year this handy pocket wonder is a whopping 152 full colour pages, chock full of, easy to read, info for boaters. Make sure you pick up your free copy and, if you have any problems getting hold of one, give us a call or visit

Sit back and enjoy the read, I’m off to make up my list to send to Santa.

Cheers. see you out on the water .
