Getting the message out

One of my simple pleasures in life (other than boating) is ‘proverbs’, I enjoy a good proverb, or quotation from famous and sometimes, not so famous, people. A good proverb says so much and delivers a powerful message in a succinct sentence using very few words.

Over the weekend I heard (again) the old chestnut that goes; ‘the two best days of a boaters life are the day he buys a boat and the day he sells it.’  I’ve never liked that saying, always thought that people who say that have either never had a boat, never been out on the water on a nice day, or else have gone into boating totally unprepared or ill advised. Some time ago, at a talk given by Thom Dammrich, President of the US National Marine Manufacturers Association, I heard him say; ‘the two best days of a boaters life are Saturday and Sunday,’ and that struck a chord with me.

I’m not sure of the origins of either of the above but, I’m guessing that somewhere along the line they may be a twist on something attributed to Mark Twain who said; 'The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.' Now that’s a powerful message and one I really do like!

OK, so much for my indulgence, now on to something important and that’s the print edition of Shipmate Marine Directory – The recreational boaters essential guide. We’ve commenced preparation of the 2014 edition, which will be our biggest yet with over 150 pages in full gloss colour. This next edition includes all the good stuff and more of everything. More pages, more listings, more categories, and it’s still free!

14,000 copies will be distributed free to boaters via yacht clubs, marinas, marine organisations and selected marine businesses. Advertising is now open and already a lot of the space has gone. Ad space in Shipmate is limited and sells out completely each year, and its no wonder, with prices for a full page from $990 and a half page $590, for something that lasts 12 months or more and is referred to time and time again by boaters.

If you’d like to see a copy of the current 2013 edition we’ve got a ‘pdf flipping book’ version on line at; check it out.

If you’d like full details of the opportunities in the 2014 edition of Shipmate, contact us at; or give me a call on 0418 587 799

In the interim, a good mix of news below from around the country, so kick back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
