Shipmate News 01 July 2013

Speculation, dedication and Innovation

Happy New (financial) Year and, with the goings-on in Canberra last week, most of the news in this edition seems tame by comparison. But never mind, still plenty of interesting news from the marine industry around Australia.

To kick off we’ve got news from NSW that Boaters are warned to navigate with extra caution on South Coast waterways after a large number of navigation markers including buoys and channel markers were washed out of place by flood waters. And in Victoria, Parks Vic has issued a couple of Notices to Mariners regarding new navigation marks and the removal of redundant ones in the areas around Beaumaris Bay, Black Rock, Davies Bay and Frankston on Port Phillip.

In September, the International Tall Ships Festival is coming to Melbourne and over 10 tall ships from the UK, Holland, NZ, Indonesia and Australia will be berthed in the Williamstown precinct providing a spectacle that occurs very rarely. The organisers are looking for volunteers and anyone from 16 years to mature age is urged to apply, see more details below.

We’ve got news of a raft of new and interesting products for boaters in this edition. GME has launched a first-of-its-kind, marine multimedia entertainment system, the G.Dek; also details of an Australian-inspired, Swiss-made range of Bausele watches, designed for the boating lifestyle; we have news of an Australian brand of world-first, topless, waterproof. mobile phone cases, the first in the world to leave the phone screen bare for direct touch, and, another interesting innovation, NoPowerSMS, a feature packed, simple to operate App that costs just $14.95 and works on Android phones to automatically send “power disconnected” and “power reconnected” messages from your boat, via an SMS text message, direct to your everyday phone.

In this edition you'll also find a summary on the success of the recent Melbourne Boat Show and the usual run down of new boat model launches and releases, many of which are timed to coincide with the up-coming Sydney Boat Show.

That’s by no means it of course, there’s plenty more but, before I close I just wanted to touch briefly on Shipmate Maine Directory – The Victorian boaters essential guide. We’ve commenced preparation of the 2014 print edition of Shipmate and this year we're pleased to annmounce we’ll be distributing a minimum of 14,000 copies. The new edition will be our biggest yet, around 150 – 160, gloss, full colour pages chock full of info for boaters. If you'd like to se a 'PDF Flipping Book' version of the current 2013 edition follow this link;

Advertising is now open and, from $590 for a half page and $990 for a full page, for something that lasts a full 12 months or more and is accessed time and time again throughout the year, it’s got to be the best value of all time.

Give me a call or send me an email if you’d like more details and I’ll send you out full details of the opportunities. My number is 0418 587 799 or email; or visit

Cheers, see you out on the water
