For fun in the sun, just add water

Strange weather right around the country of late and in Victoria we’ve just experienced one of the longest hot spells on record. While we feel for our northern neighbours, many of whom have suffered as a result of the unseasonal weather, Victorian boaters have been taking advantage of perfect boating conditions. Last weekend, (Labour Day Long Weekend in Vic), I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many boats out on Port Phillip.

On Saturday we took a run down to Werribee and spent the night at anchor up on the Werribee River . The boat traffic at the entrance was like peak hour in the CBD. Then on Sunday we cruised across to the other side to spend a day and a night at Portarlington where it was just as busy with boats of all shapes and sizes enjoying the beautiful clear waters of the Bellarine Peninsula and then, on Monday, back to town to spend the afternoon on the pick off South Melbourne beach where again, boats, large and small, with families and kids on board, or being towed on water toys, were all out enjoying time on the water.

It was great to see so many people, of all ages, enjoying the boating lifestyle. It’s certainly one of those things that brings people together, a bit of sun, a boat… just add water! With Easter less than two weeks away let’s hope we all get some decent weather so that we can get out and enjoy all the good things that boating offers.

And now to Shipmate News and as always, a good mix from around the country. The boat show season has well and truly kicked off and this month we’ve got the Tinnie and Tackle Show in Brisbane and the Rosehill Trailer Boat Show in Sydney. News too from Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, coming up in May. If you’re anywhere near Queenscliff this weekend the Queenscliff Maritime Weekend runs from Friday (today) through until Sunday.

We’ve got information on some new products hitting the market with Yacht Controller announcing the release of a new Joystick Control System, details from Collins Marine about the launch of Quicksilver boats into Australia and we hear that Barcrusher have released a new Gen2™ hull.

We also hear that Marine 13 is attracting wide interest from marine industry suppliers with only 10 booths left for exhibitors and the Club Marine, Australian Marine Industry Export and Superyacht Awards, run by AIMEX, are attracting quality applicants.

Finally just a reminder to visit our website at there you’ll find everything from the latest marine news, links to weather, tides and anything else you should know before you head out on the water, including a complete A-Z of marine trades and services and a calendar of boating events around the country. Make sure you visit us soon and while you’re there, ‘like’ us on Facebook too.

Shipmate News will be out a couple of days later than usual in April as the first of the month is Easter Monday. We wish you all a very Happy Easter.

Cheers, see you out on the water
