Technology, could we live without it?

Technology, love it or hate, it’s impacted, some might even say, intruded, on every aspect of our lives. These days we think nothing of emailing someone and expecting an immediate response.

Everyone’s connected to the world wide web and information, on just about any topic, is just a keyboard click away. Social media; Facebook, Twitter and the like, form a big part of our lives and while I’m not a fan of reading people’s innermost thoughts, used properly, it’s a great social medium allowing us to stay in touch wherever we are in the world.

And then there’s Smartphones and with Smartphones come Apps and these days there’s an App for almost everything; which leads me to my point. There’s a new App that’s just been released and this one could be a lifesaver. It’s put out by the Coast Guard and it’s called Safe Trx.

Safe Trx runs on Apple iPhone, iPad and on Android phones and tablets and it’s easy to use. You input your trip details before heading out on the water and it tracks your vessel and triggers an alert if you haven’t returned as expected.

Monitored 24/7 by the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard from their Victorian Headquarters, this new App is the first of its kind anywhere in the world and anyone going out to sea, whether it’s for professional reasons, leisure or sport is encouraged to let the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard know in advance. This App lets you do that straight from your Smartphone.

Commodore of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Ray Campbell said: “It’s been a busy few months for the Coast Guard. There has been a range of high profile incidents on our seas, on our coastline and inland waterways in the last month alone.”

While the primary focus of SafeTrx is to increase the safety of the boating community, it can also be used in other activities such as bushwalking and 4x4 driving therefore increasing the safety to the wider community. We’ve got the full story further in this edition but I thought this was just another example of technology impacting on us in a good way making us just a bit safer when we venture out to sea.

Also in this edition, news of improved facilities for boaters with upgrades to boating facilities at Patterson River, Tooradin and Bastion Point. News of Sanctuary Cove gearing up for the 25th anniversary of the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show and details of Victorian expertise helping out at Airlie Beach Race Week. There’s plenty more in this edition from right around the country, so sit back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, See you out on the water
