Shipmate News 15 February 2013

Just add water…

I’ve just been having a quick look at our new events section at www.shipmate.com.au and was struck by the diversity of boating events currently taking place around the country. There’s certainly a lot going on no matter where your interests lay.

In February alone we’ve had the Melbourne Summer boat show, the Australian Wooden Boat Festival, the Club Marine Southern 80, and coming up, the Variety Splash, Murray Meander and Cruise for a Cure.

And that’s not including any of the regular club racing, cruising, waterski and fishing tournaments taking place around the country almost daily. If you enjoy getting out on the water, there’s something for everyone, from young tackers learning to sail through to retirees cruising the coast and everything in between.

Coming up in March, there’s round 4 of the Victorian Outboard Championships, Melbourne to King island Ocean Race, Sydney Harbor Regatta, Brisbane Tinnie & Tackle show, Rosehill Trailer Boat Show and the Melbourne to Port Fairy Ocean Race.

When you stop and think about it, we really are very fortunate living here in Australia, no matter where we live, we’ve got so many opportunities to be able to get out and enjoy an outdoor lifestyle and fabulous waterways and, while we might moan and groan occasionally about politics and life in general, I certainly couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

If you haven’t already done so, check out the ‘events’ section at www.shipmate.com.au/index.html?news_type=events and, if you have an event coming up (that’s open to all and not just a club event) then let us know and we’ll get it up on the website.

And now to what’s in this edition. Firstly, news that leading boating mags TrailerBoat and Trade-A-Boat have expanded into online classified advertising with the launch of their new website, tradeboats.com.au.

We’ve also got news that applications for the prestigious 2013 Club Marine Australian Marine Industry Export and Superyacht Awards are now open and, while we’re on the subject of awards, a record 58 entries have been received across 13 categories for the Marina Industries Association’s (MIA) Marina of the Year Awards.

News too that next month's Brisbane Tinnie and Tackle Show will host the world premiere of a revolutionary line hauler, the Wavefisher, which has the potential to change Australian beach fishing forever. Check out those details below and also the article about dredging again at the mouth of the Patterson River, which has been causing issues for boaters.

There’s plenty more in this edition and lots of variety, so sit back and have a read, I’m sure you’ll find something of interest to you.

Cheers, see you out on the water
