Shipmate News 01 February 2013

Boating – Ya gotta love it!

Welcome to the first Shipmate News for 2013. I know we’re about a month into the new year, but a belated Happy New Year to all anyway.

It’s nice being back on deck after what some might call a ‘busman’s holiday’, Yep, we spent a lot of time out on the water, and in different locations too, including Port Stephens, the Myall Lakes, the Gippsland Lakes, Port Phillip and Corio Bay, and we were out in everything from small tinnies, inflatables, runabouts, large cruisers and even kayaks. It sure pays to have friends with boats!

But the point to all this is that all the time we spent out on the water just reinforced, or reminded me, just how much fun boating is, especially when you enjoy it with family and friends. It's one of those activities that brings people together, young and old, from all walks of life, relaxing, enjoying uncomplicated good times. That’s the beauty of boating and that’s why I love it!

The last few days of our break was spent enjoying the hospitality of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) where we visited for the Festival of Sails. This spectacular annual event is billed as the largest sailing regatta in the Southern Hemisphere, but let me assure you it’s much more than just a boating event. The whole of Geelong comes alive with a full weekend of entertainment, both on and off the water, for participants and visitors alike, and, with Geelong’s spectacular waterfront precinct as the backdrop, along with Australia Day celebrations culminating in a brilliant fireworks display, it’s a weekend not to be missed. Make sure you mark it in your calendars for 2014.

Plenty of news for you in this edition including a number of articles relating to the Melbourne Summer Boat show that starts today at Melbourne’s Docklands and details of construction commencing on the new 250 berth marina at St Kilda.

News also about our marine industry making inroads overseas with the Australian International Marine Export Group, (AIMEX), working with government to lead a super trade mission overseas and the Marina Industries Association taking marina training to Hong Kong.

Our Aussie boatbuilders are also working hard overseas with Riviera featuring a number of new models at the upcoming Miami Boat Show and Maritimo making a splash selling two of their M50 cruisers at the recent Fort Lauderdale show.

For fishers, we’ve got details of a new artificial fishing reef recently installed near Frankston, details about new recreational size limits for dusky flathead and news of the 2013 Recreational Fishing Guide that’s out now and available.

Finally, just a reminder that the 2013 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory, our little 140 page pocket wonder, is out now and available free, for details on how to get your copy visit

That’s about it from me, so sit back, relax and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
