Shipmate News 01 December 2013

Smartphone Apps, flipping books and hitchhikers

This year seems to have gone by so quickly and reflecting back we’ve achieved a lot at Shipmate over the last 12 months. Much of it is plain to see, like the free iPhone App we launched earlier this year and, something we are extremely proud of, taking out the 2012 Victorian Marine Service Industry Award.

But there’s been a lot more going on than just that. Something that’s not that obvious is the work we’ve done to the back end of our website, which results in it being far easier to navigate and with more information. Like the ‘Events’ section we’ve added. We now list boating events around Australia, all the boat shows, major regattas, charity boating events etc. check it out at

And, just last week, we launched our long awaited Android App for smartphones. Now it doesn’t matter what brand of smartphone you’ve got, you can have Shipmate ‘on the go’ with fast search facilities to look up yacht clubs, marinas, marine trades and services and just about anything else you need while you’re out on the water.

The Apps feature single click access to make calls or to access websites including the latest weather, tides and much more.

To download the free App for iPhones visit the iPhone App Store and for all other smartphones visit Google Play. For more info visit

The other thing that’s kept us busy is preparation of the 2013 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory, and we’re really proud of our latest edition. At 140 pages, it’s our biggest yet, chock full of info for boaters and best of all, it’s still free… Oh, and don’t worry, our little pocket wonder is still just that; pocket size! Check out a pdf ‘flipping book’ version on-line at

As usual, we sold out of all advertising space in record time and we would like to sincerely thank our advertisers and supporters because without you this free resource for boaters would not exist. Distribution is now complete with 10,000 copies going out via yacht clubs, marinas, marine organizations and selected marine businesses, so make sure you pick up your free copy.

Don’t stress though if your not near any of the above because for Victorian boaters, there’ll be a free copy of Shipmate attached to the cover of the December edition of Australia’s best selling marine magazine Tradeaboat, out on shelves, 05 December.

4,000 plus, copies, (in addition to the 10,000 mentioned above) will go out with Tradeaboat, so for a great read over the holidays, make sure you pick up a copy of the ‘book of dreams’ with our little hitchhiker attached.

Cheers, see you out on the water

John Zammit
