Shipmate News 15 November 2012

We’re full of it - Good news and free stuff that is!

Anyone who visited the Gold Coast International Marine Expo earlier this month will tell you that there are strong signs that the marine industry is well and truly emerging from what has been a bleak period over the last few years. The not-for-profit Expo has been described as ‘breathing life back into the marine industry’ with exhibitors reporting strong sales and some indicating they’ve filled their order books for the next six months. There was certainly a positive vibe throughout the whole show that had something for everyone.

While I was on the Gold Coast I was also pleased to attend, as an owner, the celebration of the launch of the 5000th Riviera. Founded by Bill Barry-Cotter, Riviera launched their first boat 32 years ago. They’ve since launched 72 different models, the most popular of which, the Riviera 40FB, they built 288 boats. When you consider that Riviera only build boats from 36 to 75 feet, it’s a sensational achievement by an Australian manufacturer and, with the recent change of management and the return of long time CEO Wes Moxey to the helm, the future for Riviera is looking good.

Good news too from that other iconic Aussie manufacturer, Maritimo, their M58 Motor yacht has taken out one of the top marine industry awards in the USA. It was named the AIM Marine Group’s, first Editor’s Choice Award winner at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

While there’s been plenty happening everywhere, we here at Shipmate haven’t exactly been idle either. We’ve recently given our website another revamp, this time adding a boating ‘events’ section.

Yep, right on the homepage, next to Shipmate News. Click on ‘Events’ and see the current months boating events at a glance, and not just Victoria either, we’re talking Australia wide. Then scroll forward to see events in forthcoming months, we’ve already listed all of the boat shows and a host of other events and we’re constantly adding more, check it out at

The other thing that’s been keeping us busy is distribution of the latest (2013) edition of Shipmate Marine Directory – The Victorian boaters essential guide. 14,000 copies of the new, 140 page, full colour pocket wonder, will be distributed free to boaters via yacht clubs, marinas, marine organisations and selected marine businesses.

If for any reason you can’t get to any of the above, don’t stress, a copy will be attached to the cover of the December edition of Australia’s best selling boating magazine, Tradeaboat (In Victoria only). It hits the stands on 05 December; make sure you pick up your copy.

Cheers, see you out on the water
