Shipmate News 01 October 2012

Have we got news for you!

Where oh where has the year gone? October already and soon it’ll be Christmas and I for one can’t wait because, that means two or three weeks of R & R; time to get out on the water, kick back, relax and just enjoy (the boating) life.

But, that’s still a couple of months away so, before I get too far ahead of myself I better let you know some of the things currently making news.

Firstly, what’s in a name? Well, some might say quite a bit and that’s why Waterfront City Marina in Docklands has changed to Melbourne City Marina to better reflect what, and where, it is. Nothing else has changed, still the same contact details, the same friendly staff and still a great destination. And, while we’re on the subject, NewQuay Marina, situated just beyond Melbourne City Marina, has recently installed additional berths and is now offering casual, as well as long and short term berthing. If you add Marina YE and d’Albora’s Victoria Harbour Marina to the mix, boaters are now spoilt for choice when visiting Docklands in the heart of the City, what with all the shopping, bars, restaurants, theatres and entertainment. Not bad huh!

Now, for all of you who have had the experience of hooking the big one but were too busy reeling it in to grab the video camera, I’ve got the perfect Christmas present for you. Sunglasses with a pinhole camera front and centre that can record up to 2.5 hours of HD video or still shots. How cool is that! Check out the article in this edition. And, there’s still plenty more; we’ve got details on the Anchorage Marina celebrating their 121st birthday with you getting the presents, an update on progress of the new RMYS 250 berth marina at St Kilda, details of the route for the 2013 Variety Splash and an announcement by the NSW Government regarding the interim venue for the Sydney Boat Show while Darling harbor is redeveloped.

But wait, there’s more… We’ve got details about the Vic Govt awarding a 5 year lease to the operators of the Launching Way boat ramp at Patterson River which means that the ramps will continue to remain ‘manned’, an announcement by Riviera that they have reached a major milestone, soon launching the 5000th Riviera ever built, an amazing achievement by any measure and, details of new fishing reefs being installed at Portarlington, Altona and Frankston. All of that, and even more, below.

Finally we’ve closed off advertising for the 2013 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory - The Victorian Boaters Essential Guide, and I’m pleased to say we’ve got a full book. Well, more than full actually, we’ve had to add additional pages to accommodate demand. The 2013 edition due out in Nov/Dec will be a bumper, 140 pages, all chock full of handy and important info for boaters and, of course, it’s all free! Our thanks and appreciation to our family of advertisers and supporters; without you Shipmate would not exist.

That’s probably enough from me, other than to remind you to check out our website at and also our new Facebook page. Please visit us and remember to ‘like’ us on Facebook, you’ll find a link on our website homepage.

Cheers, see you out on the water
