Opening Day, get involved

Hi again and welcome to another edition of Shipmate News.

With the warmer weather comes a bit more boating activity and, with the start of the official boating season almost here, most of the clubs are busily preparing for what is one of the most important days on their calendar, Opening Day.

Celebrated by most yacht clubs early in October, opening day is something that I look forward to each year. It marks the official opening of the boating calendar for clubs and is generally celebrated with just the right amount of pomp and ceremony and large helpings of bonhomie.

I’m a member of a number of clubs around the Bay and, at the club where I keep my own boat, opening day is always celebrated in style. Navy cadets and pipe bands bring colour and movement while Flag Officers and dignitaries mingle with club members and invited guests enjoying canapés and refreshments on the lawns adjacent to the water.

After a few short speeches and a blessing, the Club Burgee is unfurled before skippers and guests board their boats and head out on the water for the annual Sail Past. This is always a spectacular sight with boats dressed in their club burgee’s and code signal flags proceeding in single file past the ‘official boat’, usually at anchor, with the Commodore, dignitaries and a chaplain on board who blesses the fleet.

After the sail past, the flotilla generally heads back to the club for lunch, either in the clubrooms or on board, and for many, the day goes on well into the evening. I’m just thankful that it’s usually held on a Saturday, which leaves a bit of time for recovery on the Sunday.

If you’re not a member of a club, that’s still not a reason not to enjoy the day, get in touch with the club nearest you and find out when they are having their sail past, then get out on the water and watch the spectacle, after all, it’s just one more excuse to be out on the water enjoying our boats.

Now in this edition, as usual something for almost everyone, with a good mix of general news, information and for the locals a number of Notices to Mariners.
