Satellite boat shows, where to from here?

I’m just back from the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) and although it was a much more condensed show than previous years visitor numbers were up and everyone is talking it up with reports that there were significant sales made at the show and prospect lists are bulging. That’s good news for the industry with indications that things might be finally starting to turn around, albeit slowly. You'll find a full wrap-up of the show below.

Interesting show this year with a number of satellite shows taking place simultaneously on the Gold Coast. Riviera chose to have a reduced presence at SCIBS and staged their own Riviera Festival at their Coomera premises and ran a shuttle service from the show, Princess did similar with a large display at Hope Island, Grant Torrens expanded on his annual show at the Sovereign Islands and there were others.

While having these satellite shows taking place at the same time as SCIBS may perhaps be a good thing for the punters, I can’t help but wonder about the long-term ramifications if the trend continues.

Having one or two small shows running concurrently with SCIBS is probably manageable but, if it keeps going in the direction it seems to be, with more and more dealers and manufacturers running their own shows simultaneously, it must have a detrimental effect on SCIBS, the very show they’re relying on to draw their customers. I understand that times are still tough and costs need to be contained but, it seems to me that it's in everyone's interest to get a dialogue going before it's all too late.

And now to this edition. We’ve got lots of news, including details on the new marine safety laws that come into effect in Victoria on 01 July and a call from the Geelong (Vic) Flotilla of the Coast Guard who are calling for volunteers.

iPhone and iPad apps are all the go these days and now there's news that ACP Magazines who publish Tradeaboat and Trailerboat are releasing their publications as an iPad app. The forthcoming Melbourne Boat Show is getting into it too, they've produced an app providing visitors with an interactive boat show guide with real time information on the various products, activities and presentations taking place throughout show. The Melbourne Show takes place 5-9 July and you'll find more details below.

And while we're on the subject of apps, the Shipmate free iPhone app is gaining popularity fast and we are busily preparing our app for Android smart phones, more on that in future editions. In the interim, plenty more news below so sit back and catch up on what’s been happening and a quick reminder to visit our website at www.shipmate.com.au for up to date news, views and information on all things boating.

That’s about it from me, it’s Friday, the sun’s trying to poke through the clouds, the boating forecast is looking good, so I’m off... Going boating!

Cheers, see you out on the water
