There’s a boatbuilder back in charge at Riviera

Welcome to another edition of Shipmate News with another good mix of news, views and information.

The big news in this edition is that Riviera, the iconic Australian boat builder is now officially out of Receivership after almost 3 years. That’s not only good news for Riviera, it’s good news for the marine industry in general and manufacturing in this country.

It’s an amazing story when you consider that Riviera went into voluntary administration and receivership in May 2009 and since then has not only survived but also continued to produce new models and sell into a market, both here and overseas, that’s arguably the toughest many can remember. At the recent Miami International boat show Riviera sold six boats.

One of the most amazing stories that has come out of all this is the tremendous brand loyalty shown by Riviera customers. Riviera has built over 4950 boats and in the peak was building over 420 a year. They are currently building 70 boats per year ranging in size from 36’ to 75’ of which over 30% are exported.

The company was purchased by Australian owned, Longhurst Marine Holdings Pty Ltd, a Qld based investment company, and Wes Moxey, CEO at Riviera until August 2008, has been reappointed as CEO.

I spoke to Wes at length the day after he took over and he told me that after stepping away for three and a half years, he’s come back refreshed and re-energised. 341 out of nearly 400 staff have been retained and Wes said he’s looking forward to working with the team to continue building well designed, quality products and backing that up with the best possible customer service. We wish them well, more details below.

Plenty happening in other news, including details on upcoming boat shows, Sanctuary Cove in May and the Gippsland Lakes Boating and Lifestyle Expo to be held 14 -15 April. See details below.

If you’re in Victoria and you haven’t already done so, make sure you pick up a copy of the current Tradeaboat magazine, apart from a good read, you’ll also find a free copy of the 136 page, Shipmate Marine Directory attached.

You may also be aware that Shipmate is available on the web at www.shipmate.com.au and as an iPhone App, well now we’ve just started on a free Android App, which will be available soon, more details on that in future editions.

That’s about it from me. Sit back and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
