Summer's gone but it's still boating weather

Today marks the first day of Autumn and, as if nature is trying to remind us, the temperature has dropped dramatically down here in Melbourne over the last couple of days. However, I'm resisting the long sleeves and long pants at the moment, I figure that as long as I keep wearing shorts, at least it still feels like summer.

Actually, I don't really mind Autumn, we get some nice days at this time of the year and not a lot of wind, so for a power boater like me, you get some of the best boating weather at this time of year.

Speaking of boating, we spent a few days last week on the Variety Splash, we joined 200 other participants, on board 17 boats, on a three day cruise around Port Phillip. In the process we raised over $110,000 for children in our community with special needs. The Variety Splash, this year celebrated its fifth anniversary and since its inception in 2008 has raised over $500,000 for Variety - the Childrens Charity. Shipmate is a supporting sponsor of the splash and also a participant, see more details below.

Also this month, Trade-a-boat magazine, Australia's best selling boating mag has a hitchhiker, we've hitched a free copy of Shipmate Marine Directory to every copy of Trade-a-boat (issue 424) sold in victoria. Trade-a-boat issue 424 is on sale now so, head on down to your nearest newstand and purchase your copy of Trade-a-boat and get two great publications for the price of one.

In the news in this edition; Details about a bonus first aid pack from GME when you purchase either a GX300 27MHz radio or a white GX600 VHF radio. Information about a free smartphone App that Fisheries Victoria has released making it easier to access a myriad of facts about fishing in Victoria. News that the 2012 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) will be the venue for over 60 international and Australian launches and, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival Riverside Opening Weekend is on this weekend, March 3-4 but, did you know you can berth your vessel either at Waterfront City Marina or Yarra’s Edge Marina for between $40 and $50 a night? More details on all of the above, below.

That's it from me, sit back and enjoy the read, I'm off to check the boating forecast.

Cheers, see you out on the water
