Shipmate News 01 December 2011

Interesting thing about boats, just when you think you’ve got everything just right, something else crops up. I thought I had my boat all set for the holidays and almost as an afterthought I thought I’d have a diver go down and check my anodes and give the hull a bit of a scrub.

Well, as it turns out, lucky I did, he found my Cutlass Bearing had worked itself part way out of the skeg. Lucky I was able to get the boat out of the water at short notice and have the problem fixed. I hate to think of the damage, the cost of repair and the inconvenience, had it come out completely while I was underway. Not something I really want to think about!

It did serve to remind me again though that boats generally live in a harsh environment and regular inspection and maintenance is all important, after all, it’s not just us, more often than not we have family and friends on board, so, if you’re going boating over the summer, make sure you’ve done all your checks and that all your maintenance is up to date.

And now on a slightly different subject, I’m pleased to report that the 2012 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory, the Victorian boaters essential guide, is currently being distributed via yacht clubs, marinas, marine organizations and selected marine businesses.

Make sure you ask for your free copy of this 136 page pocket wonder, from your marina office or wherever you keep your boat. If you have any problems obtaining your free copy, please give us a call on 03 9690 5435 or shoot us a quick email at info@shipmate.com.au.

I’m also pleased to report that the free Shipmate iphone app is proving popular and the feedback so far has been all positive, if you haven’t downloaded it yet make sure you visit the App Store and download your free copy.

Finally, I would like to take a moment to remind you that Shipmate is raising funds for Variety, the children's charity.

Dedicated to transforming the lives of children with special needs, Variety aims to increase their quality of life by supplying essential items like wheelchairs, walking frames, Braille and Dynavox speech machines, etc.

Variety raises funds in a number of ways, including running events like the Variety Bash and the Variety Splash.

Shipmate is a supporting sponsor of the annual Variety Splash, but apart from that, we’ve also entered our own team and aiming to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause.
