Technology, you've gotta love it!

I don’t know where we’d be these days without technology, press a button or flick a switch and things just happen, as if by magic, but, oh, don’t you just hate it when something goes wrong.

I remember a time when, if something went wrong with your car or boat, you simply got on with it and fixed it yourself. These days lift the bonnet of your car and it’s hard enough just seeing the engine, let alone trying to repair it. Same thing with boats now, what with electronic engines, fly by wire controls, satellite navigation etc.

I’ve been reminded of those days recently because I seem to be having a run with electronic gizmos that just won’t do what they’re supposed to.

A couple of months ago heading back in to the marina after a day out on the water I lost power in one (electronic) engine. Lucky I’ve got two, except trying to get back into my berth with a cross breeze blowing and trying to move to starboard with the port engine out of action is not a lot of fun.

Turned out the problem was a $12 relay but, of course it took an electronics guy a couple of hours to find the problem, then there was travel time, and then he didn’t have the right relay so a trip to the local auto electrician took another hour and by the time my problem was solved I was out of pocket hundreds of bucks.

Yesterday my computer died, same story, first it was a software problem, then it was hardware, and finally it had to be taken away to computer hospital (or wherever computers go to be fixed). My first panic attack came when I thought all my files were lost somewhere out in the ether. Having recovered those, now I’m just stressing about the bill when it comes. At least in the old days if I lost the keys to my filing cabinet at least I knew where my files were.

What’s all this got to do with boating? Not a lot really, I think I just needed to vent, and, having got that off my chest, I have to admit, I do like technology.  No way would I wish to go back to the old days…  Except maybe for the fuel prices!

And now to Shipmate News. In this edition, a good mix from around Australia including news that Australia has come out on top at the conclusion of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. We have news about the forthcoming Melbourne Summer Boat Show and a wind up from the Gold Coast Marine Expo held recently at Gold Coast City Marina.

Lots of news in this edition too about new products, giveaways and promotions, and what our marine exporters are up to at overseas shows.

The 2012 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory is now complete and this little 136 page pocket wonder will be available soon with distribution about to commence. If you’d like to see what it looks like, check out this little bit of technology by clicking here

Our Shipmate iphone app is doing well too, we’ve had some great feedback, so if you’ve got an iphone, download it free from the app store. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to use and how things just happen… That’s technology!

Cheers, see you out on the water
