Shipmate News 01 November 2011

The weather's chilly but the boating's hot

All this talk about global warming, I’m not too sure that it applies down here in Victoria. Why we’re almost two thirds of the way through spring, with summer less than four weeks away, and the weather has been very ordinary to say the least. What is going on?

Well maybe the weather is a bit on the chilly side but, things are starting to heat up as far as boating is concerned with the inaugural Gold Coast Marine Expo on this weekend and, as well as that, Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show have just announced that exhibitor applications for the 2012 event are now open.

Good news too for Riviera who have 32 boats, worth approx $50 million, under construction and all scheduled for delivery pre Christmas. Things certainly hotting up a bit there.

And down here in Melbourne, the world’s best Olympic sailors will battle it out on the bay with the first leg of the prestigious ISAF Sailing World Cup held at Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) from 6-12 November 2011.

As part of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, Melbourne will see sport and industry join forces for the 10th International Sailing Summit (ISS) from 8-10 November. The International Sailing Summit is a worldwide industry forum bringing together the best in the business with the aim of promoting sailing on a global scale. More details below.

A good mix of news all round in this edition, including some new product releases, details on the much anticipated new Buizen 52 set to be launched later this month and a couple of Notices to Mariners for Victorian boaters re new tidal gates at Whalers Cove and a change of light characteristics at the Kerford Road Pier.

In our last edition we announced that we’ve finally released Shipmate as an iphone app and you’ll find the details again in this edition. I must say the take up has been fantastic and we’ve had a lot of feedback, all very positive.

I know I’m biased but, I’ve just come down the coast from Sydney to Melbourne in a little 32’ Island Gypsy (at an average of about 7 knots) and I can honestly say that I found the iphone app very handy and convenient, especially in terms of accessing up to date weather, synoptic charts, tides and even real time wave buoys along the NSW and Victorian coast. If you’ve got an iphone make sure you download it today, it’s available free from the iphone App Store.

That’s about it from me, I’m off to check the boating forecast… on the Shipmate iphone app of course…

Cheers, see you out on the water
