There are bargains everywhere, including our own backyard

Interesting conversations I had with a couple of boat dealers earlier this week about grey imports. Within the space of a couple of days, in separate conversations, a couple of days apart, both related a story to me about how they had made a sale to a client that had earlier indicated to them that they were heading overseas to buy a boat.

At first I thought they must have been talking about the same client, but no, as it turns out, two totally separate clients and two different boats. What they both were saying to me is that there are deals to be done here and in a lot of instances, both private sellers and dealers are prepared to negotiate to meet the market and to get a deal done here.

I guess the salient point in all this is that while there are some cheap boats to be had in the US and elsewhere overseas, especially while the $A is right up there, sometimes, when it’s all said and done, and a lot of intangibles like freight costs, service and support, conversion from 110v to 240v, the worry about potentially buying a lemon etc. are taken into account, sometimes, the bargains aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

That’s not to say there are not those who’ve done very well by bringing in a boat from overseas, I just think the relevant point here is that you can’t be sure that you’ve got such a bargain if you haven’t taken the time to have a good look and do some negotiating here first.

On another note and the 2012 edition of Shipmate Marine Directory (the booklet) is well underway and we are about to close off the advertising. The support we’ve had again this year has been great with all advertising almost sold out. We do have a small amount of space left, so if you’re interested in getting your message out to 10,000 boaters and grabbing an advertising bargain, you need to get in quick.
