Shipmate News 01 June 2011

It’s all looking positive

Quite a bit in this edition of Shipmate News this time so hopefully something for everyone.

Firstly though, a brief apology to those who received the last edition of Shipmate News twice. It was coming to you remotely and my internet connection was rather patchy causing me to think that it hadn’t been sent, so, as you do, I hit the button again, only to find later that I’d sent it twice… Aaagh! don’t you just love technology.

Now amongst the stories this week is news of an opportunity that doesn’t come around too often. Audi Australia’s contract as naming rights sponsor of Geelong’s Victoria Week has expired and whilst they will still retain a level of sponsorship, it paves the way for a new naming rights sponsor of this world famous yachting regatta, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and Australia’s oldest, dating back to 1844.

Victoria Week attracts over 400 yachts, 4700 event participants and in excess of 100,000 patrons to the free shoreside festival along Geelong’s beautiful waterfront. More details below but, if interested, prospective sponsors should contact the event organizer Jav Greaves on Ph 0413 704 409 or Email:

With the first of the major boat shows, Sanctuary Cove, now over, comes lots of positive news from many of the 384 exhibitors. Riviera reports sales of 10 boats worth over $15m, Integrity sold two of their pilothouse trawlers, Princess sold a 72 and a 52 footer, Palm Beach, a couple of 52’s, and many others including Ensign, Clipper, Hampton Endurance, Alaska and Mustang, all report strong sales or good prospects from the show. Let’s hope that with the Melbourne Boat Show coming up in just over a week, this strong start to the season continues.

Well winter is closing in fast and, one of the things that I really enjoy at this time of the year, is boating down here on Port Phillip. You get some sensational water out on the bay in winter and with my own boat, Blue Tango, still up at Port Stephens on the NSW coast, I’ve decided it’s time to bring her back home. With that in mind I’m keeping a close watch on the weather, and my diary, for a suitable window within the next two or three weeks to make the cruise back down south.

Now finally as always, a reminder to log on to our website at to keep up to date with what’s happening in the boating world. We’re regularly updating the website, not only with news and events but also updating the listings with new additions every month, so no matter what it is your looking for in relation to your boat or boating, you’re sure to find it on Shipmate. Make sure you visit us soon

Cheers, see you out on the water
