Boating for a cause

Two events held in different states last weekend have again highlighted the generosity of the boating community. The annual Variety Splash, held in Melbourne, raised around $150,000 for children in our community with special needs and we have more details on that in this edition of Shipmate News.

In Sydney, Cruise for a Cure organized by Steve Batton and his crew at SBM Maritimo saw 420 people, of which 320 were children with cancer and their families, entertained on 45 boats with over $40 thousand raised for the cause and we’ll bring you more details on that in the next edition of Shipmate News.

I think that these two events again highlight how the boating community rallies for people in need and it’s events like these that combine our passion for enjoying time on the water with the opportunity to provide tangible and worthwhile support for people, especially children, less fortunate than ourselves.

Shipmate is a supporting sponsor of the Variety Splash and I’ve taken part in all four Splashes since the first in 2008. I can honestly say that they are so much fun and an opportunity to cruise in company with a great bunch of people and be entertained for the whole three days.

When that’s coupled with the fact that while we’re out there having fun we’re actually raising funds for such a good cause, well, that’s a combination that’s hard to beat! If you’ve got a boat and you haven’t been involved, I suggest you visit and have look at what the Splash is all about. Then start planning your entry for 2012. I guarantee you’ll have a good time and be helping a great cause.

Now in the rest of Shipmate News, we again have a bit of a mix of news and, we think, something for everyone but, as we remind you each time, make sure you visit us at where we post news on a regular basis throughout the month and remember if you’ve got some news you think might interest boaters, send the details to

Cheers, see you out on the water
